Educational Equity Panel

Audience members on Saturday can expect a spirited debate when panelists on opposite sides on the school reform gather to debate the issue of education equity. League of Women Voters has partnered with CU Denver to address one of the most pressing issues of fairness and inclusion in today’s “reformed” public schools. Panelists represent a full range of stakeholders including educators, business, research, policy, law, and community.

Sally Augden, League organizer added, “With school board elections in November, this is a critical times for voters to become informed on issues that will have a significant impact on the futures of our children, the economy, and the quality of living here in Colorado.

Education policy has grown to be one of the most contentious topics in the Colorado legislature. Unlike other “hot button” issues such as gun control and abortion, the dividing line in education reform has opponents and proponents from both sides of the aisle and still equally divided.

“We have lost many of the gains since the Civil Rights Movement,” said Angela Engel, Executive Director of Uniting4Kids, “with twice as many children identified as At-Risk since the passage of No Child Left Behind, we have yet to deliver on the promise of equity, particularly for low-income and children of color.”

The panel will be moderated by Steffan Tubbs, co-host of KOA 850 morning news.

Dr. Shelley Zion, Executive Director of Continuing & Professional Education in the School of Education and Human Development at CU Denver, will provide the welcome.
